The Washington Nationals could consider a major splash by moving CJ Abrams this offseason.
Abrams isn't a free agent until 2029, but trade speculation keeps surfacing. Jon Morosi indicated on MLB Network's "Hot Stove" that a split remains possible.
"A trade is a little more likely than an extension for CJ Abrams," Morosi said Friday morning. "... I do believe that the Nationals would love to extend Abrams. But he has played so well of late that the number has kept going up and up."

Morosi opined that Abrams "fits so many teams in so many different ways." He mentioned the New York Yankees as a potential fit to play second base alongside young shortstop George Lombard Jr.
However, Morosi added that Abrams still wants to play shortstop, and that desire could deter an extension with Washington. The Nationals swapped him and Nasim Nunez in their infield late in the 2026 season after Abrams committed 20 errors with -17 outs above average at short.
"I have a hard time imagining that he would sign an extension in DC unless there was some degree of assurance given that [shortstop] would be his primary position, at least at the outset of that deal," Morosi said.

Four years ago, the Nationals acquired Abrams and James Wood as part of a massive haul for superstar outfielder Juan Soto. They could repeat history and shop Abrams at his peak trade value.
Abrams fueled a much-improved Washington lineup with 33 home runs, 34 stolen bases, and a .834 OPS in 2026. He posted the highest walk (8.7%) and barrel (10.5%) rates of his five-year career.
USA Today's Bob Nightengale also anticipated the Nationals exploring offers for Abrams, and they could listen on Wood despite preferring to extend him.
