"I actually went to bed annoyed," Cohen told SNY. "'Oh, we didn't get him.' The agent for Bo had called us right after and discussions started. You never know how they're gonna go. They moved really quickly."
In an ideal world, the Mets would have loved to have paired Tucker with Juan Soto in the corner outfield spots for this year and beyond. However, Bo Bichette is certainly not a consolation prize by any means as he fills a big void at the hot corner. His defensive abilities should help to improve the overall infield defense as Jorge Polanco is very inexperienced at first base.
Cohen's transparency about how things unfolded revealed that the Mets did in fact have a plan for the offseason after losing Diaz and Alonso contrary to what many fans believed. While Bichette and his agent may have been able to gain a considerable amount of leverage after Tucker signed, it wasn't enough to deter the Mets from adding their big bat.
Bichette, of course, become this year's Alex Bregman and leave after just one season by opting out of his contract with the Mets. That decision, though, won't come until the end of the year, and it will largely be decided upon based on how the team performs this season.
