The New York Mets will be the first to tell you: Signing Pete Alonso is far from a guarantee.
As negotiations continue, the Mets reportedly had their latest bid of three years, $70 million shot down by Alonso and his agent, Scott Boras. Reports indicate the Toronto Blue Jays are still in the mix and could attempt to one-up the Mets.
Whether or not Alonso leaves for the Blue Jays or a potential mystery team, they could elect to trade for this first baseman who is familiar with playing in the National League East.

Rhys Hoskins has spent the last two years in Milwaukee, but he has only played one season due to missing all of 2023. Prior to that, he played six seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies, so he was very familiar with the atmosphere of Citi Field.
Hoskins had a down year in 2024, when he hit just .214 but still produced 26 home runs and 82 RBI. Those numbers would've seen him finish fourth in both categories on the Mets a year ago.
Here is what a potential trade could look like:
- New York Mets acquire: 1B Rhys Hoskins
- Milwaukee Brewers acquire: INF Brett Baty, RHP Dom Hamel (Mets No. 15 prospect in 2024)
The Mets would receive Hoskins, who is set to make $18 million in 2025 on a player option. He has an $18 million mutual option for 2026 before becoming a free agent. Unless he has a poor showing like he did in 2024, the Mets would likely pick up the option in 2026.
As for the Brewers, they would receive Brett Baty, who would man the hot corner in Milwaukee. In limited big-league action in 2024, Baty hit .229 for the Mets with four home runs and 16 RBI.
Dom Hamel would be a rising arm for the Brewers farm system and could make it to the big leagues if things work in his favor. He posted a 6.79 ERA in 27 starts with Triple-A Syracuse in 2024 -- a number that ballooned as a result of 77 walks.
The Mets know their options are limited if they lose out on Alonso. Trading for Hoskins could very well be one of their last chances to bring in a player from outside the organization.
