Luke Weaver's stint with the New York Mets was short-lived.

The Mets traded the right-handed reliever and cash to the Pittsburgh Pirates on the last day of MLB's Aug. 3 trade deadline. Before making his debut with his new team against his former team on Friday, Weaver revealed to reporters that he wanted to stay with the Mets this season and made it clear to the franchise's front office.

“I was very upfront. I told them, ‘I hope you know I want to stay,’” Weaver said. “I made my commitment … but I understand how this goes. It’s not my first rodeo.”

Weaver signed a two-year, $22 million deal with the Mets in December. Before that, he spent two seasons and part of the 2023 season with crosstown rivals, the New York Yankees.

Mets President Explains Why Weaver Was Traded

Weaver still had another season on his contract with the Mets, while other potential trade pieces on the teams were on expiring contracts. New York ultimately decided to trade Weaver for shortstop Sammy Stafura, who is now the Mets' No. 11 overall prospect.

The Mets also traded right-hander Huascar Brazoban, who was under team control through the 2027 season. Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns explained to reporters why the organization decided to trade Weaver and Brazoban even though they were not on expiring contracts.

“Ultimately the returns that we were able to get, we thought made sense and were in the best interest of the organization, recognizing that at this time of year you are able to get really good talent back for relief pitching,” Stearns said.

Now, Weaver is part of the Pirates' bullpen. In his club debut on Friday, Weaver gave up a hit and walk but no runs in one inning against the Mets.
