The Giants called up Kai-Wei Teng to the big league club on Aug. 1, and he was expected to make a couple of starts as Roupp continued to recover. When Roupp returned, it was expected that Teng would be headed back to Triple-A, but the team made another roster move on Tuesday.

Carson Whisenhunt was sent to Triple-A, while Tyler Fitzgerald was called up to the big league club. If the plan is for Fitzgerald to serve as a placeholder for Roupp's return and go back to Triple-A when he is activated on Friday, then why not use Whisenhunt straight up?

Teng had his chance to earn his stay on the major league roster on Wednesday and allowed six earned runs, seven total, in 1 2/3 innings pitched against the San Diego Padres. This puts the Giants in a predicament; if they send down Teng, then they would have to roll a bullpen game every fifth day.

The Giants have to make a decision Friday, and they could do some more roster manipulation to bring up a fifth starter following Teng's poor outing, but their plan remains to be seen. If Teng were to have a strong showing on Wednesday, he might have earned another chance at starting his next turn.

The Giants have some decisions to make ahead of their Friday game against the Rays, but gaining back Roupp is a positive for the squad.
