All eyes should be on the Chicago Cubs leading up to the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline.

With the Cubs being among the top teams in the National League, there is a real expectation that they will be looking to add to their roster ahead of the deadline.

One of the Cubs' most obvious trade needs is starting pitcher help. The Cubs' rotation is in need of a boost, and this is especially so when noting that they have dealt with injury trouble this season. Due to this, the Cubs are now viewed as a top potential landing spot for one of the New York Mets' most notable trade candidates.

In a recent article for CBS Sports, Mike Axisa urged the Cubs to try to acquire Clay Holmes from the Mets to bolster their rotation.

"It is more likely the Cubs trade for Freddy Peralta, who knows manager Craig Counsell well from their time together with the Brewers, but I think Clay Holmes is simply the better pitcher right now," Axisa wrote. "Right now, though, for the rest of 2026, give me Holmes. He's the Mets pitcher the Cubs should target, not Peralta."

When looking at how Holmes has pitched in recent seasons, it is easy to understand why Axisa is urging the Cubs to acquire him. In his nine appearances this season before breaking his leg in May, he had a 2.39 ERA and 45 strikeouts. This is after he had a 12-8 record, a 3.53 ERA, and 129 strikeouts during the 2025 season with the Mets.

With numbers like these, Holmes has shown strong consistency and would be a fascinating player for the Cubs to add to their rotation. The 6-foot-5 righty is nearing his return from injury, so the Cubs should not be afraid to strike a deal for him. He could be a very strong pickup for the middle of their rotation if acquired.
