The Chicago Cubs should be aggressively looking to improve their roster ahead of the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline.

It is clear that the Cubs need to strengthen their pitching rotation if they hope to be a threat this postseason. With that, it would not be surprising if they look to add a high-impact pitcher or two to their rotation by the deadline.

Now, the Cubs are being urged to trade for one of this year's top trade-candidate starting pitchers.

In a recent article for The Athletic, Jim Bowden said that the Cubs' "perfect trade target" for the deadline is San Francisco Giants All-Star pitcher Robbie Ray.

"The Cubs need to keep trying to upgrade their rotation," Bowden wrote. "Ray will be a free agent this offseason and would be a solid get for Chicago."

With the Cubs needing pitching help, it would make a lot of sense for them to acquire Ray. He would have the potential to give the front half of their rotation a major boost if brought in.

Ray has also been excellent this season on a struggling Giants team. In 20 appearances this season, he has an 8-6 record, a 3.33 ERA, and 96 strikeouts. His resume also adds to his appeal, as he is a former Cy Young Award winner and a two-time All-Star.

The Cubs are currently in a position to make a big splash for a star pitcher like Ray. It will be interesting to see if they make a push for him, as the fit looks good on paper.
