Excitement over the reported acquisition of Alex Bregman is dominating Chicago Cubs circles this week, but the team's front office is remaining active.
Chicago's lineup is in a great place heading into the new year, but there will need to be some improvements from the pitching staff. Trading for Edward Cabrera to bolster the rotation should help if the righty can stay healthy, but the Cubs entered the offseason needing depth as much as star talent.
Though the Cubs already had a number of both major- and minor-league signings locked in to compete for bullpen spots in spring training, they evidently thought it could help to bring in one more -- especially since they could get their hands on a former first-round pick.

According to a Sunday report from Ari Alexander of WHDH-TV in Boston, the Cubs and right-hander Tyler Beede agreed on a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Beede, 32, was the San Francisco Giants' first-round pick in the 2014 draft out of Vanderbilt. He was one of the co-aces on the Commodores team that won that year's College World Series, with a roster that included future major league All-Stars Dansby Swanson, Walker Buehler, and Bryan Reynolds.
Beede didn't go on to immediate stardom, as he took until 2018 to debut in the majors and wound up with a 5.55 ERA in his first 71 career appearances, the most recent of which came for the Cleveland Guardians in 2024. He's pitched for three different organizations since leaving the Giants, including the Minnesota Twins last year.
An odyssey of a professional baseball career has also taken Beede to Japan (from 2022 to 2023) and Mexico (a brief stint last summer). He also made five starts for the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League last season.
