There are plenty of positions the Atlanta Braves need to worry about improving, but catcher is not one of them.

Rookie Drake Baldwin shone this season, and the Braves also have former All-Star Sean Murphy signed through the 2028 season. Unless one of those two gets traded, it's unlikely anyone else in the organization will see significant playing time behind the plate.

That prompted a three-year major league veteran to exit the Braves organization at the end of the regular season.

Catcher Jason Delay was a long-time minor leaguer in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization who broke through in 2022 and played 134 games in the majors over the next three seasons. But after he was designated for assignment in April, he was picked up by the Braves, who never seemed to show interest in promoting him to Atlanta.

Delay spent nearly the entire season in Triple-A, and was outrighted off the 40-man roster in July. He played out the end of the season despite having no hope at arriving back in the majors, and on Thursday, he elected free agency according to his official roster page.

A four-year starter at Vanderbilt, Delay was part of the 2014 College World Series championship squad.

In 68 minor league games this season, the 30-year-old slashed .200/.261/.257 with just one home run and 15 RBIs. He also allowed 94 stolen bases to 20 runners thrown out.

One can never know if a player will get another opportunity, but at this point, Delay's best hope would be to grind it out on another minor-league deal and hope to land in an organization with thin depth behind the plate.
