A day after the World Series ended, Bo Bichette reportedly reached a major decision about his future.
According to The Athletic's Will Sammon, Bichette will exercise his player option to remain with the New York Mets in 2027. The third baseman will make $42 million next season rather than test free agency.
Bichette joined the Mets on a three-year, $126 million contract after taking the Toronto Blue Jays to Game 7 of last year's World Series. The deal included opt-outs after each season, so he'll have another chance to leave next winter.

Bichette's decision isn't too shocking following a tepid first season with the Mets. The two-time All-Star batted .260/.312/.390 with 18 home runs and 1.9 fWAR in 698 plate appearances.
The Mets may have felt some buyer's remorse with Bichette hitting .210/.264/.271 in his first 45 games through May 16. However, the 28-year-old found his footing and hit .280/.331/.438 the rest of the way, far closer to his career .288/.332/.456 slash line.
Along with a change of scenery, Bichette was also learning a new position. The former shortstop grew increasingly comfortable at third base, ending the season with one out above average at the hot corner.

Bichette would have been one of the top available position players in a relatively weak free-agent class, but he still would have struggled to justify a $42 million salary. He'll instead stay with the Mets, who went a disappointing 74-88 in 2026.
A more productive season from Bichette could help revitalize an offense led by veteran stars Juan Soto and Francisco Lindor, both of whom missed considerable time this season. Outfielders Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing each delivered encouraging rookie campaigns, giving the Mets' lineup a strong foundation for 2027.
