The reported imminent demise of the LIV Golf tour appears to have been greatly exaggerated – at least for now.
Reports indicated LIV Golf could cease operation as soon as today, with the tournament in Mexico City on the chopping block. More Golf: LIV Golf Moving Forward With Tournament Amid ‘Bombshell’ Announcement
While the 2026 season will continue, what will happen to the PGA Tour rival after the season concludes? Former ESPN host Trey Wingo revealed LIV was hit with an ultimatum after the Saudi Public Investment Fund pulled out of financing the golf tour in the future.
"You can shut it down now or you can ride it out through the end of the year and get outside funding," Wingo said. "Any new capital is unlikely to come from Saudi Arabia’s investment arm, which has shifted priorities."
No final decision has been made on the future of the PIF's investment in the tour that launched four years ago, but the investment fund is "actively considering the extent and duration of its support," according to the Financial Times.
LIV Golf is currently set to produce its tournament from Mexico City, which tees off this afternoon.
