PGA Tour star Rory McIlroy entered the Open Championship as one of the favorites to hoist the Claret Jug.

After opening with a two-over, 72, the six-time major champion bounced back with a three-under, 67 on Friday to enter the weekend seven shots off the lead. McIlroy started his final round eight shots off the lead, but found two early birdies to move to four-under and within shouting distance.

He closed three bogeys and a double-bogey to go along with two birdies for a closing 71 to end up at one-under for the tournament and nine shots off the lead.

Following a tough major outing, McIlroy is making a change to his schedule and taking some time off to finally celebrate his second Masters title.

"I haven't really taken the time to enjoy that or celebrate that," he said. "Poppy's got another four weeks off school until she goes back, so I'm just going to enjoy the summer holidays with her and Erica. That's what I'm looking forward to the most."

McIlroy admitted the grind of the PGA Tour doesn't "get his juices flowing" at this stage of his career.

"I think it just sort of ebbs and flows," he said. "There's been years where I've given it maybe more of my attention and years that I haven't. I guess I'm just at a stage that I have other things that I prioritize. I came to that decision last year, and I'm just sort of doing the same thing."

With major season in the rearview, McIlroy can take a rest before the PGA Tour playoff season.
