At one point during his third round, Rory McIlroy sat at two-under par and was in contention to win his second U.S. Open title.

Instead the "wheels came off" during the third round when he finished five-over on the back nine to shoot a three-over, 73. With the U.S. Open in the rearview, McIlroy is skipping the PGA Tour's Travelers Championship, the final signature event on the calendar, and will instead start focusing on links golf ahead of the Open Championship.

"I'll be playing some links golf this week probably coming up," McIlroy said. "It's my favorite time of the year to go back home and play, play the Open, and I get to spend a bit of time back there."

McIlroy admitted Shinnecock Golf Club gave a good taste of what links golf will bring.

"This was not too dissimilar to an Open Championship in terms of how the golf course started to play over the weekend," McIlroy said.

The Open Championship tees off on July 16.
