"I was just sort of stuck in neutral for most of the week. Even par over the weekend is not going to get it done," McIlroy said. "I just felt like any time I got a little bit of momentum out there, I seemed to make a bogey. It was just one of those weeks I couldn't get it going."

He compared this season to last season, where he lost momentum following the whirlwind of winning the Masters.

"This season feels very similar to last season. Obviously I won the first major of the year and fell off a little bit after that, but any time you win a major in a year, you have to be pleased about that."

After winning his first ever Masters last season, McIlroy recorded just one other top-10 in a major when he finished in a tie for seventh at the Open Championship. This season, he finished inside the top 10 at the PGA Championship just a month after the Masters, but struggled in the final two majors.
