Robert MacIntyre entered the Open Championship as one of the favorites to win the event given his past success in links style courses.

Just last year he finished in a tie for seventh place, which gave the Scottish golf star his third top-10 at the event since making his debut in 2019. MacIntyre entered the weekend just four shots off the lead after opening with a three-under, 67 and backing that up with a one-under, 69 on Friday.

However, he failed to take advantage of that early success and saw his tournament hopes collapse of the final two rounds, where he shot back-to-back one-over, 71s to finish at two-under.

His poor play over the weekend showed as the golfer took out his frustration on the golf course, slamming his clubs to the ground on several occasions. As a result, he received an official "code of conduct" warning from the R&A.

Ahead of the tournament, the R&A made it clear poor sportsmanship wouldn't be accepted.

“If a player’s (or their caddie’s) behavior is so far removed from what is expected in the spirit of the game of golf, in accordance with Rule 1.2b, the Chief Referee, in consultation with the Chief Championships Officer, may issue an official warning or apply a penalty of two strokes or disqualification, taking account of the frequency, impact or potential impact, intent and severity of the misconduct. An official warning does not need to be given prior to applying a penalty of two strokes or disqualification," it said.

It's unclear if MacIntyre will be assessed a penalty.
