Rory McIlroy finished the first round of the 2025 Genesis Invitational in a tie for 14th place with a score of even par. Playing in the afternoon, McIlroy had to contend with very unfavorable weather conditions, but he was not the only Irishman to face the challenge.
Seamus Power survived the first round better than McIlroy and will start day two in second place at 3-under, just one stroke behind leader Denny McCarthy. However, Powers was quick to point out how challenging it was to play in the conditions at Torrey Pines on Thursday.
"Honestly the toughest part was just getting it on the fairways today," Power said. "You know, You're wearing extra layers. It almost feels harder in these sort of conditions and as soon as you miss a fairway you're in big trouble. So that was a big thing. If you get on the fairways, the greens are soft enough that you could get to some pins."

The two-time PGA Tour victor also revealed the most challenging aspect of Torrey Pines Golf Course during the first round, a detail he admitted he was not expecting:
"The trickiest part of the day, which I wouldn't have expected, is they put a lot of pins in higher spots. With the softness of the greens it was difficult to get short irons and wedges close to the hole, tough to take enough spin off it. I thought that was one of the surprising tough things of the day."
Despite the challenge Torrey Pines presented in these conditions, Power appreciated the excellent test of golf it provided to measure his skills. The 37-year-old from Tooraneena in County Waterford, Ireland, also predicted that the conditions would likely continue throughout the tournament:
"On a golf course like this, you know it's going to be tough," Power said. "Today and tomorrow are going to be very difficult, probably all four days really. You just kind of know what's coming and there's no real letup, you've got to hit some good shots."
"That's the beauty of this golf, course it's right there in front of you but you do have to hit a lot of good shots in a row and it's going to test every part of your game."
Power started the first round in a difficult position when he parred the first and bogeyed the second. However, he quickly picked up the pace and leveled the score with a birdie on the 6th. He did not make another bogey for the rest of the round, birdieing the 9th, 15th and 17th.
Seamus Power will start his second round at 1:36 pm Eastern Time, teeing off on hole 10. He will share the group with Patrick Rodgers and Ben Griffin.
