American figure skater Alysa Liu has been in the spotlight for much of the past month, ever since the Winter Olympics began in Milan and concluded at the end of February.

The 20-year-old was already a highly popular athlete thanks to her accomplishments at a young age and her remarkable story of retiring at 16 only to return and dominate the sport a few years later.

Liu won two gold medals for the U.S. over the past few weeks — one in the team event and another in the women’s singles free skate final, where she delivered a near-flawless performance.

Since the Olympics, she appeared on numerous talk shows and given countless interviews, and many expected her to make a quick turnaround to compete at the World Figure Skating Championships in Prague, Czech Republic, later this month.

However, in a surprise move, Liu withdrew from the competition. On Sunday, just days after returning home to the U.S., she broke her silence on the decision via her Instagram story.

“Hellooo, as some of y’all already know, I withdrew from Worlds,” Liu wrote. “There’s been a lot of exciting things happening since my return from Milan, so I’m taking some time for that. I will be cheering everyone on from afar — see y’all next season!!”

Replacing Liu later this month will be Sarah Everhardt, who will perform alongside fellow U.S. skaters Amber Glenn and Isabeau Levito, who both represented the country at the Olympics.
