A short video showing a shelter dog quietly waiting for someone to finally choose her is leaving viewers emotional all across social media.

The clip, shared in February by volunteer Jackie Gonzalez on TikTok under the username @jjack.iie, shows a small dog pacing and staring toward a door inside her kennel at Valley Animal Center in Fresno, California. Throughout the 40-second video, the pup appears sad and heartbroken, repeatedly looking toward the entrance as if hoping someone will arrive for her any moment. The caption of the video reads: "40 seconds of a shelter dog who never gets chosen…"

Gonzalez told Newsweek that the pup, Molly, is an 8-year-old girl whose whole world was left tied to a pole with a note that read, ‘Take care of Molly, I can’t take her anymore.’

"In October, she arrived at Valley Animal Center confused and heartbroken. She didn’t understand why the person she loved walked away. She was so stressed, she wouldn’t eat. She didn’t want to approach anyone. She was terrified…just sitting there, waiting, hoping her owner would come back for her. But no one came," Gonzalez said.

She added that Molly has now spent months at the shelter, watching as potential adopters pass by her kennel.

Gonzalez said: "Months have passed, and Molly is still here; watching, waiting, being overlooked. She has become almost invisible—families walk by her kennel every day without stopping. The stress of shelter life weighs heavily on her; she is extremely kennel-stressed, and it’s breaking her spirit. You can see the sadness in her eyes, the way she longs for quiet, for comfort, for someone to finally choose her."

While life in the shelter has been difficult for Molly, Gonzalez said the dog’s personality shines through when she gets love and attention.

"Molly needs a home where she can be the only animal—no other dogs, no cats—just her and her person. And when she has that one-on-one love, she is incredible. She is deeply affectionate, craving cuddles and closeness. Give her a tennis ball, and she’ll happily chase it all day long, her tail wagging like she’s remembering what joy feels like again."

The volunteer added that Molly isn’t looking for anything complicated—just a stable place where she can finally feel safe. "She isn’t asking for much: just a soft place to land; a couch to curl up on; a person who won’t leave her behind. Molly is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, and ready to finally go home."

Rescuing an adult dog is one of the most-rewarding experiences, but it may take time for them to adjust to a new home.

Preparing in advance—by dog-proofing the house, providing essentials like beds and toys, and creating a quiet resting area—can help them feel safe.

During the first few days, it is important to let the canine settle at their own pace, avoid overwhelming them with attention, and keep the environment calm.

Short, familiar walks and gradual introductions to people or other pets can reduce stress. Establishing a consistent routine also helps build confidence.
