Sam Altman has admitted that ChatGPT needs a "naming scheme revamp" after the announcement of the latest model, ChatPGT-4o Mini.
While responding to comments on social media, Altman acknowledged that the name of the new release, could do with a change. OpenAI has used the same naming convention for ChatGPT and its various versions since development.
OpenAI announced the new release, which it describes as "our most cost-efficient small model", on July 18. Altman promoted the model on his X account (formerly Twitter), saying: "15 cents per million input tokens, 60 cents per million output tokens, MMLU of 82%, and fast. Most importantly, we think people will really, really like using the new model."

While many respondents praised the product, one commenter joked that the name of the ChatGPT models, which have extended as OpenAI has expanded their development, needed a change. Replying to Altman's tweet, they said: "You guys need a naming scheme revamp so bad."
Altman rarely posts or replies on social media, which he normally uses to promote his work at OpenAI. However, he did on this occasion, to agree with the suggestion, saying: "Lol yes we do."
Altman made a similarly rare break from his standard posting on social media after the attempted assassination of Donald Trump, when he posted a somber message on X that called for "turning down the rhetoric and find slightly more unity."
OpenAi does not have any stated plans to change the name of ChatGPT, which has rapidly become one of the most well-recognized and widely used chatbots in the artificial intelligence space. Its success is the main reason why Altman and OpenAI emerged as such significant players in the industry.

The new ChatGPT-4o mini model is part of OpenAI's long-term plan to make artificial intelligence more accessible, as it is significantly cheaper than previous models while still being able to perform the common tasks that ChatGPT is known for. These include customer support, translation, and data processing.
OpenAI said: "We expect GPT-4o mini will significantly expand the range of applications built with AI by making intelligence much more affordable."
"GPT-4o mini surpasses GPT-3.5 Turbo and other small models on academic benchmarks across both textual intelligence and multimodal reasoning, and supports the same range of languages as GPT-4o."
Altman has said that previous ChatGPT models have turned out "way better" that he thought they would be, and that development in AI could reach the point where future versions could help discover cures for cancer.
