A woman who recently adopted a dog learned the heartbreaking reason why the family surrendered her in the first place.

When TikTok user @allyondra went to adopt a dog at a Texas animal shelter, she quickly fell in love with Luna. The shelter employees started sharing information about Luna—she's a great dog, good around kids and lived in a family home with no aggression history. But when the family's world turned upside down, so did Luna's,

"She was surrendered due to the family facing deportation," Allyondra told Newsweek via TikTok. "The shelter was letting us know Luna was a sweet dog and that her being surrendered was not due to her having bad behavior."

Dog adoption after family surrenders

...

Hearing the news of the family needing to surrender Luna because of deportation brought Allyondra to tears. She said it hurt knowing that the family loved Luna, but had to give her up. She couldn't fathom the thought Luna was feeling abandoned and upset, which made the decision easy for her: she needed to adopt Luna.

"I felt deep sorrow for the family and hoped that they were all okay," she said. "My immediate reaction was putting myself in the family's shoes. I would be devastated if I had to leave my dog behind."

Since bringing her home on February 15, Luna has adapted well to her new home. She lives with two other dogs and because Luna is used to hearing Spanish, Allyondra said she understands what the family says. Luna loves running in the yard, going on walks and, like any dog, enjoys her naps. Allyondra said Luna is currently learning about stairs and how they work.

"I am dedicated to being able to help families facing deportations in any way I can," she said. "I know if this were to happen to anyone, we would be thinking about our fur babies forever and wondering where they ended up at."

Viewer Reactions

With over 225,300 views and 67,700 likes, last week's TikTok video brought many viewers to tears and shone a light on how animals are affected by deportations.

"Stop, I didn't even consider their pets. I'm crying!" said a viewer, while a second person commented: "I hope they see this."

Another added: "So sad I wonder how many loved animals were displaced because of what's going on. We already have crazy overpopulation in shelters this shouldn't be happening to people to LOVE their dogs."

Someone else wrote: "Her lil face in the last picture got me. She's thinking about her family and saying, 'I miss you so much, but I'm ok now.'"
