A suspicious package was sent to the New York restaurant owned by actor Robert De Niro.

Officers from the New York Police Department could be seen at the Tribeca Grill as they dealt with the package, which was believed to contain an improvised explosive device.

Police were called at 4:45 a.m. on Thursday, which was found on the building's seventh floor. The restaurant and neighboring building in Lower Manhattan were evacuated and no one was hurt.

Police sources told the New York Post that the parcel was "the same" as those containing pipe bombs sent to CNN's headquarters and key Democrats.

It follows a series of bomb alerts that began on Monday with devices sent to former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, former president Barack Obama and other key Democratic figures who have criticizedTrump.

Like most of the others, the package sent to De Niro had six American-flag stamps in two rows, and the return address was that of Representative Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who was a former chair of the Democratic National Committee. There was no information to suggest she had sent the packages, CNN reported.

In a statement, the NYPD tweeted: "We are responding to reports of a suspicious package in the vicinity of Greenwich and Franklin streets in Tribeca, Manhattan. Please avoid the area and expect a police presence and heavy traffic."

Helicopter footage on CNN showed what the channel described as a containment vehicle delivering the package to a location in the Bronx for it to be examined.

De Niro has been vocal in his criticism of the president, and once called him "a national disaster."

He even appeared at the Tony Awards in June saying "F**K Trump," before adding: "It's no longer down with Trump. It's f**k Trump".

De Niro and Trump have traded jibes in the media, with the president calling him a "very low IQ individual" who he said "received to [sic] many shots to the head by real boxers in movies," referring to De Niro's portrayal of boxer Jake LaMotta in the 1980 movie Raging Bull.
