Robert Carradine, the actor best known for his performances in "Revenge of the Nerds" and "Lizzie McGuire," has died at the age of 71.

His family said he died after living with bipolar disorder for many years, and expressed hope that sharing the news would help raise awareness of mental health struggles.

"It is with profound sadness that we must share that our beloved father, grandfather, uncle, and brother Robert Carradine has passed away," the Carradine family said in a statement to Deadline on Monday.

"In a world that can feel so dark, Bobby was always a beacon on light to everyone around him. We are bereft at the loss of this beautiful soul and want to acknowledge Bobby's valiant struggle against his nearly two-decade battle with Bipolar Disorder.

"We hope his journey can shine a light and encourage addressing the stigma that attaches to mental illness. At this time we ask for the privacy to grieve this unfathomable loss. With gratitude for your understanding and compassion."

Bipolar disorder is a mental health condition marked by extreme mood swings, including periods of unusually high energy or elevated mood known as mania, and episodes of depression. These shifts can affect sleep, behavior and daily functioning.

Life and Work

Born on March 24, 1954, in Los Angeles, Carradine came from an American acting family.

Carradine starred in numerous films and TV shows. His career began in 1972 with a film debut in "The Cowboys" with John Wayne.

Carradine later appeared in "Mean Streets" directed by Martin Scorsese; portrayed road racer Jim Cantrell in the 1976 comedy "Cannonball"; and featured in the Oscar-winning drama "Coming Home" opposite Jane Fonda and Jon Voight.

Robert also appeared alongside his brothers, Keith Carradine and David Carradine, in the 1980 ensemble western "The Long Riders."

He is perhaps best known for his role as Lewis Skolnick in 1984's "Revenge of the Nerds" and its sequels, as well as for playing Sam McGuire on the Disney Channel series "Lizzie McGuire" from 2001 to 2004.

He is survived by his daughters, Ever Carradine and Marika Reed Carradine, and his son, Ian Alexander Carradine.

Tributes

Keith Carradine, Robert's brother, said: "We want people to know it, and there is no shame in it. It is an illness that got the best of him, and I want to celebrate him for his struggle with it, and celebrate his beautiful soul. He was profoundly gifted, and we will miss him every day. We will take solace in how funny he could be, how wise and utterly accepting and tolerant he was. That’s who my baby brother was."

Lizzie Maguire co-star Hilary Duff wrote on Instagram: "It's really hard to face this reality about an old friend. There was so much warmth in the McGuire family and I always felt so cared for by my on-screen parents. I'll be forever grateful for that. I'm deeply sad to learn Bobby was suffering. My heart aches for him, his family, and everyone who loved him."
