The Boston Red Sox will have virtually their entire coaching staff from this season return for next season.

One of the remaining question marks for Boston's coaching staff was Red Sox legend Jason Varitek. After spending his entire 15-year career with the Red Sox, Varitek returned to the team in a coaching capacity as a full-time uniformed coaching staff member in 2021. He was named the team's game-planning coordinator and run-prevention coach last season, but with his contract expiring, it was unclear if the organization would bring him back.

MassLive's Sean McAdam reported Friday that the Red Sox were finalizing a multi-year contract that would bring back Varitek to the coaching staff for next season.

"The Red Sox and Jason Varitek are finalizing a new multi-year contract which will keep the former captain part of the team’s coaching staff, multiple industry sources confirmed Friday," McAdam wrote. "An announcement is expected soon. Varitek’s contract as the team’s game-planning and run-prevention coach expired at the end of the season. There had been speculation that Varitek might receive some interest as a managerial candidate elsewhere, but it appears that there were no requests to interview him.

"It’s unknown how long the new deal is for, though one industry source speculated that it would run through the 2027 season to align with manager Alex Cora’s deal. Varitek’s imminent return means that virtually the entire coaching staff will return for 2026."

The Red Sox allowed only 596 earned runs this season, the fifth-fewest in the league, and made it to the postseason for the first time since 2021 in Varitek's first season in his new role. Though Boston dealt with defensive issues, leading the league with 116 errors, the team clearly has a bright future. Maintaining the coaching staff will allow the Red Sox to focus more on roster construction and player development this offseason.
