The Boston Red Sox had a very talented team this year, but they didn't compete for the World Series in the same way that many expected them to. In fact, they finished in third place in the American League East.
Now, the Red Sox might lose Alex Bregman to free agency. Bregman opted out of his contract and entered free agency for the second time in as many seasons. Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently projected Bregman would sign a massive $182 million deal this winter, which should fit the Red Sox's payroll.
Sportsnaut's Matt Johnson recently predicted the Red Sox would re-sign Bregman in free agency this offseason.

"Given what happened with Rafael Devers and Mookie Betts, letting Alex Bregman depart in MLB free agency feels inexcusable for the Boston Red Sox," Johnson wrote. "Other teams will certainly get involved, especially the Detroit Tigers, but Bregman has been pretty open about his desire to remain in Boston. Other clubs will drive the ultimate contract price up, but the Red Sox keep their All-Star third baseman, and Bregman finishes his career playing at Fenway Park."
Bregman should be the team's top priority this winter.
He was one of their best players this season, so he's owed a big contract in free agency. There are bound to be a lot of suitors in his sweepstakes, but the Red Sox need to do whatever they can to bring him back.
