The Boston Red Sox are likely going to be active this offseason after an early postseason departure.

One of Boston's goals toward the end of the regular season was to hire a second-in-command to Craig Breslow, with former assistant general manager Paul Toboni being the frontrunner. Before anything could be finalized, the Washington Nationals poached Toboni, naming him their new president of baseball operations.

Though the Red Sox's offseason plans may have changed in the front office, the team's roster needs remain the same. Boston tried to add a high-impact starter to its rotation at the trade deadline, but ended up only acquiring Dustin May. The Boston Globe's Tim Healey suggests that the Red Sox could make a trade this winter with the Nationals for All-Star southpaw pitcher MacKenzie Gore.

"With former Red Sox assistant GM Paul Toboni now running the Nationals, is there a deal to be made?" Healey said Tuesday. "MacKenzie Gore is due to be a free agent after the 2027 season, probably before the Nationals are actually good again. Toboni, of course, would know what talent from the Sox farm system he would like to pluck."

Gore, 26, would fit perfectly as the Red Sox's No. 2 pitcher behind ace Garrett Crochet. The lefty pitcher had a 4.17 ERA and 1.35 WHIP, with 185 strikeouts across 30 appearances. Despite a 5-15 record, Gore was named an All-Star for the first time. The Nationals were one of the worst teams in baseball this season, and don't figure to be that much better next season.

Gore is set to be a free agent after the 2027 season, so it makes sense that the 26-year-old will be looking for an extension soon. No deal is currently in the works between the two teams, but with Toboni's knowledge of Boston's farm system, it would make sense for him to consider making a trade with Boston for young talent.
