DIVERSITY

E-Interview

In conversations with Newsweek, Brookshire Grocery Company answered the following questions:

1. How do you approach fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion within the organization?

At Brookshire Grocery Company (BGC), our number one focus is our people. Our company discusses, supports, and showcases its support of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DE&I) from the highest levels, including the Board of Directors and executive leadership team. This level of support reinforces the importance and commitment to DE&I for all employee-partners throughout the company. BGC's DE&I program is founded on the idea that people matter. We focus on education and celebrations, which make our workplace inclusive and equitable for all. BGC is committed to building and maintaining diverse, equitable, and inclusive communities with our partners and customers in the markets we serve.

2. What strategies have you implemented to ensure an inclusive workplace culture?

BGC has established a DE&I Council made up of diverse partners from throughout the company. The council meets monthly to conduct important conversations and discuss ways to ensure BGC is a great work environment for all partners. Additionally, a full-time DE&I Manager helps guide the company on fair and equitable hiring practices, inclusive policies, and effective training on DE&I related topics. All the while, we focus on honoring our partners through celebrations and recognition.

3. Can you share examples of successful diversity and inclusion programs or initiatives that have positively impacted the company culture?

At BGC, we see the value in sharing our stories, which fosters empathy, builds connections, and allows us learn from one another. With this idea in mind, we launched a video series showcasing partners from diverse backgrounds allowing them to share their story and educate others. These spotlight videos are aligned with observances such as Black History Month and Women's History Month. The company has received positive feedback from our partners who say they feel a sense of belonging.

Additionally, we acknowledge our partners who exhibit DE&I values through companywide recognition programs. The DE&I Star Award is awarded each quarter to partners who advance BGC's DE&I initiatives and strive to make their workplace fair and inclusive. The DE&I Champion award is an annual recognition to honor leaders who have taken actions to further DE&I in the workplace and community.

4. How does the company measure progress in terms of diversity and inclusion, and what metrics or key performance indicators (KPIs) are used to assess the effectiveness of DEI initiatives?

BGC's DE&I program is guided by a well-formulated strategic plan which consists of various initiatives. These initiatives are tracked and reviewed frequently to ensure the program is meeting these goals. Additionally, partner satisfaction is gauged through annual surveys, tracked analytics on internal and external communications and participation in DE&I training and events. The company also monitors diversity throughout the organization and promotes increasing diversity company-wide, in all areas.

5. What steps has the company taken to ensure that employees from diverse backgrounds feel included and valued in the workplace?

The company seeks opportunities for representation on various platforms including the internal intranet, partner app, social media and local media. We strive to make BGC partners feel acknowledged, empowered, inspired and valued. By sharing content showcasing these diverse identities and their experiences, and offering various trainings, DE&I seeks to bring our partners into the conversation so they may offer guidance and their viewpoints. An example of this is offering trainings on navigating the multigenerational workplace. Open discussions are also held with partners of various age groups to garner multiple perspectives. In doing this, and working together, the company as a whole will have better outcomes. We also strive to have our company leadership reflect diversity at all levels.

6. In what ways does the company support ongoing education and awareness around diversity and inclusion, both for employees and leadership, to foster a more inclusive and culturally competent workplace?

Ensuring an inclusive work environment for our partners is a priority and education plays a vital role in achieving this goal. The company offers comprehensive trainings covering important topics such as microaggressions, navigating a multigenerational workplace, understanding visible and non-visible disabilities, and more. While we utilize our Learning Management Systems (LMS) for training, we are committed to going beyond traditional methods and providing education in dynamic and engaging formats. Examples of this include educational events, interactive internal articles, video-based projects that help educate partners and raise awareness on various topics. Corporate and retail leaders within the company receive additional, formal training to continuously learn unique ways to make BGC a great place for all.

7. How do you ensure that DEI is embedded in the company's values and not just seen as a checklist item?

BGC has a 95-year history of serving customers and valuing our partners. The company's six core values are held in high regard and are taught, recited and reinforced throughout all company meetings. These core values include: "Jump Over The Counter" Service Excellence, Do the Right Thing the Right Way, Competitive Grit, Do your Best Every Day, The Team Matters and Results-Driven with a Future Focus. The promotion of these core values helps establish an environment of fair treatment and inclusive acceptance. Valuing and leveraging the unique differences of our partners and creating an inclusive work environment makes BGC a great place to work.
