e-Interview

In conversation with Newsweek, Lisa Brown, executive vice president & CAO at Primerica, answered the following questions:

1. Can you provide an overview of your company's workplace culture and values, and how they contribute to a positive work environment?

Our Human Resource policies and employment practices are constantly reviewed to align with current best practices to serve our emerging workforce without bias. We conduct internal and external pay equity reviews that have resulted in pay investments throughout all levels of our organization.

Primerica is also committed to helping employees face the demands of juggling personal needs by offering several flexible work arrangements, such as remote and/or hybrid work, flexible hours and compressed workweeks. While offering flexible work schedules, we have been intentional about sustaining our great culture by providing our employees with collaborative opportunities. This includes the launch of Employee Resource Groups and the enhancement of our community engagement footprint by supporting organizations that focus on multi-cultural community support.

2. How does your company promote diversity and inclusion within the workplace? Are there any specific initiatives or programs in place?

We have a multi-year, multi-faceted approach to promote D&I at Primerica. Our overall Diversity, Equality, Inclusion and Belonging (DEIB) strategy was developed to enhance our great culture while creating a welcoming environment where current and future teammates can safely work, learn and thrive in their careers. Our training experience, Intrinsic Inclusion, was launched for all levels of the internal organization. The workshops focused on a series of learning principles that taught participants about personal biases and the effects they have on engaging with others. These efforts were embraced from the top, beginning with our senior management team in 2021. They continued into 2022 with the launch of a facilitator led DEIB training which spanned multiple sessions over several months throughout the U.S. and Canada.

We have also increased our efforts to observe culturally focused commemorative holidays to educate and embrace various cultures and traditions. This includes the addition of a floater holiday, which allows our teammates to use this time to celebrate events and traditions that are most important to them.

3. Are there any professional development and growth opportunities available to employees? How does your company support career advancement?

Leadership development and succession planning are at the center of our DEIB efforts and a focus of the organization's Board of Directors. Identifying, developing and mentoring all talent with a heightened focus on diverse talent is critical for the sustainability of our company.

We enhanced our high-potential Leadership Development Program curriculum and worked with our most senior executives to identify emerging talent so we could invest in their personal growth, refine their leadership skills, encourage their community stewardship and strengthen business acumen. As a result, two high-potential talent cohorts were revitalized; our Talent Development Program and Executive Development Program provide a 12 month, high-touch learning experience for emerging talent at the Manager through Senior Officer levels.

In addition to the above-mentioned programs, our HR team enhanced our learning platform with a variety of courses and tools for self-paced learning that afford our employees opportunities to enhance their capabilities as they maneuver their careers. A Management Fundamentals curriculum was also launched that provides leadership training for those aspiring to attain a manager role, including newly promoted leaders as well as our seasoned professionals.

4. What measures does your company take to support employee mental health and well-being?

Primerica offers our employees and their family members a robust Employee Assistance Program (EAP). The program provides short-term counseling, legal consultation, financial expertise and resources, and referrals for a wide range of mental health topics and challenges. We recently enhanced our program by providing 8 counseling sessions, in person or via video, at no additional cost. As a result, we are seeing high participation of the program. In addition to our EAP program, we have several resources through our medical benefits, including telemedicine for Behavioral Health, Nurse Case Manager and Care Support for those who have been diagnosed with a serious illness or caring for a loved one, and therapy services to help with the emotional and physical challenges related to a medical diagnosis. We also offer onsite yoga sessions for employees, which focus on developing strength and flexibility while bringing awareness to the body and mind. As part of our diversity commitments, we have a dedicated work life balance Employee Resource Group where employees share and participate in ways to maintain an active and healthy work life balance.

5. How does your company ensure transparency and open communication between management and employees, fostering a sense of trust and belonging?

We work to ensure that our employees understand our strategic direction and corporate goals as well as recognize their role in achieving our success. In addition to our "open-door" policy that encourages employees to contact leaders throughout the organization to ask questions or to resolve a concern, a variety of communications tools are used to ensure that employees stay well-informed. The company has a very robust intranet that provides a plethora of timely and relevant information. For more than a decade, we have launched annual pulse surveys that allow employees to provide feedback on a variety of topics. The company responds with survey action plan commitments, signaling to our employees that their opinions matter. Finally, we have several routine engagement touchpoints with our employees that are in person or via virtual meetings including quarterly officer meetings, frequent video messages from our CEO and C-suite executives, annual employee town hall meetings, company-wide email and text blasts, and television monitors in breakrooms displaying critical company and employee information.

6. What steps does your company take to ensure equal opportunities for employees of different backgrounds, including gender, ethnicity, and age?

At Primerica, we take seriously our responsibility to protect and promote human rights and act with due diligence to avoid negatively impacting others, addressing any issues as they occur. Primerica cultivates a work environment in which DEIB is embraced, employment-related decisions are not discriminatory or retaliatory, and employees treat each other with mutual respect and dignity. We work to foster a safe, inclusive, and respectful workplace, and appreciate the fundamental rights of our employees, including equal opportunity for everyone, a safe and healthy workplace, freedom from discrimination, and freedom from child labor. We provide an inclusive work environment that exemplifies our DEIB principles and where our teammates feel accepted, where their ideas are welcomed, and they can work in a collaborative setting allowing them to have a positive impact on our business and in the community. The vast majority of our employees work at the company's headquarters in suburban Atlanta, and our workforce reflects the diversity found in the local market. As part of the hiring process, Human Resources reviews the slate of candidates for professional and managerial level positions to monitor the diversity of the candidate pool. We respect and appreciate all individuals and embrace both our differences and similarities.

7. How does your company encourage and support employee engagement and empowerment?

Giving back is an integral part of Primerica's culture. Our volunteerism efforts span across non-profit organizations that support the communities in which we live and work. Examples of how our employees give back include cleaning up green space, feeding the hungry, giving blood, providing items for homeless shelters, fundraising for cancer research and support, and supplying holiday gifts to children and the elderly. Employees receive a paid volunteer day every year to participate at a non-profit of their choice. As a result of our strong employee volunteerism, we have received numerous awards and recognitions from non-profit organizations.

8. Can you provide examples of employee-driven initiatives or employee resource groups that exist within your company to support specific communities or causes?

Primerica is committed to a culture of Inclusivity and Belonging. We want our employees to be comfortable bringing their whole self to work. In 2022, Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) were created and supported by executive leaders who serve as sponsors for the various ERGs. The initial cohorts are thriving and building interest across our organization: Primerica Black Professional Network (PBPN); Primerica Uniting Latinos and Serving Others (PULSO); Asian Pacific Islander (API); and PriBOLD (Balancing Our Lives Daily). ERGs promote allyship and allow employees to remain connected in our hybrid work environment. To date, over 200 employees are members of at least one ERG. Two additional groups are planned for future launches: LGBTQIA and She Leads.

These cohorts allow employees to stay connected in our hybrid work environment and engage with others throughout the company who share similar backgrounds. From blood drives, giving campaigns, and annual cancer awareness activities, our ERGs routinely support and serve in the company's numerous local and nationally based community efforts throughout the year.

9. What types of employee benefits and perks does your company offer? How do these contribute to overall job satisfaction?

We continually review our benefits package to ensure that our employees have access to a broad array of health services. To help ensure the health and vitality of our employees, we strive to provide them with a comprehensive benefits package to support their healthcare needs, as well as their family's needs. We provide access to top medical, dental and vision carriers. Employees and dependents have access to board-certified, expert doctors for a second opinion via phone or video. In addition, we have focused on convenient care by providing on-site care, such as mammograms, onsite dental, Weight Watchers, yoga and free flu shots for all employees. To address financial well-being, we provide our employees with an award winning 401(k) plan with a generous company match. Primerica also offers a Health Savings Account (HSA) with a company contribution, Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA), Short Term Disability, Long Term Disability and Parental Leave at no additional cost, and Basic and Supplemental Life and AD&D Insurance. Additional perks include a subsidized onsite café, discounts to the Primerica gift shop, holiday gift cards, shred day, onsite mobile car detailing. We also offer recognition through service milestones, retirements and cash awards.

10. How does your company encourage teamwork, collaboration, and effective communication among employees?

Primerica fosters a work environment in which DEIB principles are embraced. Employment-related decisions are not discriminatory or retaliatory, and employees treat each other with mutual respect and dignity. These behaviors are demonstrated and exemplified by our most senior leaders, allowing our employees to understand the very behaviors and engagement practices in a transparent way that are expected from all teammates. These attributes coupled with a variety of communication techniques from leader-led messages, annual surveys, emails, video communications and routine meetings create an environment that fosters open dialogue, company priorities and problem-solving as business and personnel needs arise.
