e-Interview
In conversation with Newsweek, Jenni Myles, executive vice president and Chief People Officer at KBR, answered the following questions:
1. Can you provide an overview of your company's workplace culture and values, and how they contribute to a positive work environment?
Everything we do at KBR is centered around people and aligned with our ONE KBR Values. Our values are the essential and enduring principles that drive our day-to-day business activities and define us as a company.
- We Value Our People
- We Deliver
- We Are People of Integrity
- We Empower
- We Are a Team of Teams
No matter where our employees are in the world, we aim to inspire them through our shared values, purpose and culture, and to offer them fulfilling careers and an exceptional employee experience, all underpinned by compelling and competitive rewards.
2. How does your company promote diversity and inclusion within the workplace? Are there any specific initiatives or programs in place?
We're dedicated to creating collaborative environments that transcend cultures and geographical boundaries, where all ideas, viewpoints and input are heard, respected and considered. And while we've made tremendous progress, we're always striving to be better.
We believe that all our individual differences are valuable. By embracing those differences and working together, we're more innovative, resilient, safer and better prepared to conquer any challenge.
We have taken important steps to elevate and advance KBR's focus on inclusion and diversity including:
- Sponsoring a wide range of employee resource groups, including Pride and Allies (LGBTQIA+), the Armed Forces Community (veterans and their families), ASPIRE (gender diversity), MERGE (ethnic diversity), and ADAPT (disabilities).
- More than doubling our makeup for minority ethnic groups on the KBR Board of Directors since 2020.
- Using data to inform our hiring practices and internal policies so we can ensure parity and enhance diversity. While we've made tremendous progress across all areas, we are always striving to be better informed and to continuously improve.
- Partnering with numerous external organizations that are helping us take meaningful action toward being a place where everyone can belong, including Disability:IN, AMIE (Advancing Minorities' Interest in Engineering), and Catalyst, Inc.
3. Are there any professional development and growth opportunities available to employees? How does your company support career advancement?
Our commitment to the development and learning of our people is represented by an integrated talent development matrix of technical skills, interpersonal and general workplace skills, leadership and management skills, and skills for the future (e.g., cloud, cyber, data science, digital engineering).
KBR offers opportunities for employees to grow across all levels through coaching, training and mentoring programs. The company also offers multiple tailored, in-house leadership development programs including Front-line Leaders, the Managing Excellence Program for senior managers, the Global Leadership Development Program for future executives, and the ONE KBR Tech Fellows program for distinguished technical leaders across the business.
4. What measures does your company take to support employee mental health and well-being?
At KBR, we've implemented a five-fold strategy to supporting our people's mental health and well-being.
- Creating the right culture, where employees know they're in a supportive environment and that it's okay to talk about mental health.
- Equipping employees with the resources they need to proactively improve their mental health and well-being, just as they would their physical fitness. Resources include our employee support program, free access to the app-based meQuilibrium platform, and more.
- Equipping managers, so they know what their roles are and where they can refer employees should they need help.
- Ensuring the ways we work create a positive impact, such as providing employees with flexible work arrangements, which allow for better work-life balance
- Measuring our performance by collecting actionable data through methods such as employee surveys.
5. How does your company ensure transparency and open communication between management and employees, fostering a sense of trust and belonging?
KBR is committed to creating environments where all our employees feel supported, that they belong, and that they feel they can freely express ideas or concerns.
KBR's Agile Performance and Development platform encourages regular check-ins between employees and their managers to align on priorities, provide feedback and coaching, and discuss the skills and experience needed to advance their careers.
We believe our people's feedback is the most important tool we have for ensuring KBR is the best possible place to work. To that end, we conduct an annual global employee survey to discover what we're doing well and where we need to improve. Each year, we've used our people's anonymous feedback to make crucial improvements to our business and our overall employee experience so that KBR can stand out as a place where people can truly belong, connect and grow.
KBR's executive leadership team is dedicated to open communication and the company uses multiple channels for employees to have open, honest conversations with managers. Employees also have the ability to submit anonymous questions or comments anytime.
6. How does your company handle feedback and suggestions from employees? Is there a system in place for employees to voice their concerns or ideas?
As mentioned above, KBR employee feedback has led to the development of global action plans to improve specific areas of the business and the employee experience. In addition to our annual employee survey, we also host town hall-style events where employee questions are fielded and answered by senior leadership in real time.
In addition to our open and anonymous ethics hotline, KBR has also launched a Psychological Safety initiative to further empower employees to freely express ideas and opinions without fear. This is not limited to ethical issues. We know our people are experts in their fields. We want them to feel they have the freedom to voice ideas around solutions development, winning business and other important matters, and to know those ideas are welcome and will always be taken seriously.
7. Can you provide examples of employee-driven initiatives or employee resource groups that exist within your company to support specific communities or causes?
KBR's employee resource groups (ERGs) help shape our ONE KBR culture by bringing together people of different backgrounds who, though perhaps separated by miles, are united by their interests and commonalities.
These groups celebrate our company's diverse employee population. And with ERGs across the global KBR network, there's a home for anyone seeking to make an impact at KBR.
Below is a list of our current ERGs.
ASPIRE
ASPIRE is committed to the development of women and the promotion of gender diversity for the benefit of all KBR employees. With eight chapters spanning four continents, the group aims to build a culture of inclusion and respect to enhance team performance and make KBR a more efficient business.
Pride and Allies
KBR Pride and Allies is an employee-led group whose mission is to support the LGBTQIA+ community and help to educate its allies. Pride and Allies was founded on the belief that businesses are more successful and employees more productive when those employees can be themselves. The group is for everyone, no matter their sexual orientation.
IMPACT
KBR's young professionals network consists of chapters around the globe that serve as the launching point for developing the next leaders of KBR through professional development, networking, community outreach, and career and personal enrichment.
OK NoW (Network of Well-being)
OK NoW advocates building personal resilience and educating people on the best ways to take care of themselves. The group tackles difficult conversations and works to change the culture around mental health by providing information and holding lunch and learns and Tea & Talks.
Armed Forces Community
The Armed Forces Community connects veterans, reservists, spouses and supporters across KBR. This community respects and honors the sacrifice and commitment of its members and raises awareness for issues and events related to the Armed Forces Community.
MERGE
KBR's Minority Employee Resource Group for Empowerment (MERGE) was created as a vehicle for employees of underrepresented demographics to freely express ideas and to develop new initiatives with a community of like-minded individuals.
ADAPT (Abled and Disabled Allies Partnering Together)
ADAPT exists to educate and empower individuals with disabilities, their managers, colleagues, and parents or caregivers. ADAPT advocates for the advancement of individuals at KBR with disabilities through thought leadership, practical solutions, comprehensive resources, and a community of members dedicated to inclusion for persons of all abilities.
8. How does your company ensure a safe and inclusive work environment for all employees, free from discrimination or harassment?
At KBR, we respect and value the diversity of our people. We know that the cultures, ethnicities, religious backgrounds and gender identities that make us who we are as individuals also make us a better, more socially sustainable company. When promoted with our culture of inclusion, our diversity enhances innovation, improves decision-making and strengthens our company.
We have taken important steps to elevate and advance KBR's focus on inclusion and diversity (I&D). A few examples include:
- KBR has partnered with numerous external organizations that are helping us take meaningful action including Disability:IN, AMIE (Advancing Minorities' Interest in Engineering), and Catalyst, Inc.
- In 2020 formed the Global I&D Council, which includes cross-functional business leaders from across the organization. The council reports directly to KBR's CEO and ELT, and operates alongside the Sustainability Committee. The team's mission is to review, assess and champion new initiatives that support KBR's journey toward increased global diversity, and doing so in a way that promotes inclusivity and enhances our company's team-of-teams culture.
- In 2021, Stuart Bradie signed the CEO Action for Diversity and Inclusion pledge to showcase that commitment.
- We have sponsored a wide range of employee resource groups (ERGs) because we believe people should have opportunities and safe spaces to connect with others and to make an impact at KBR
9. How does your company celebrate and recognize employee achievements and milestones?
KBR has multiple formal and informal programs for recognizing employee achievements and milestones. Globally, KBR recognizes work anniversaries, supports a spot bonus program for eligible employees, sponsors the KBR Value Awards for employees that go above and beyond to embody our values, and a CEO Award HSSE Excellence. In addition, regional teams across the globe sponsor and support various award programs. These are often highlighted on KBR's official social media channels.
