The Philadelphia Phillies addressed a major question to open the offseason by signing veteran slugger Kyle Schwarber to a new contract.
With Ranger Suárez expected to leave town in free agency, all eyes have turned to star catcher JT Realmuto. Realmuto is likely to remain in Philadelphia, but the San Diego Padres make a lot of sense as a top suitor, too.
Bleacher Report's Joel Reuter predicted the Phillies would re-sign Realmuto to a new deal this offseason, which seems like the next logical move for the front office to make.

"The Phillies have already crossed off most of the items on their offseason to-do list, re-signing Kyle Schwarber, adding Adolis García to shore up the outfield and giving Brad Keller a multi-year deal on the pitching side of things," Reuter wrote. "The one major lingering question is whether J.T. Realmuto will be back as the starting catcher. If he signs elsewhere, there is no in-house option to replace him, and a quick pivot to Victor Caratini, Jonah Heim, Elias Díaz or someone on the trade market will be necessary."
Realmuto's coming off a solid season with the Phillies. He's not in the prime of his career anymore, so he's not expected to sign for as much as his last contract.
Still, he's a very valuable asset to the Phillies. It's hard to find catching production like he brings to the table, especially on the open market. The Phillies should be willing to sign him to a two or three-year deal to keep him in Philadelphia for the rest of his best seasons.
