The New York Mets won the Pete Alonso sweepstakes last offseason, but it was only because there weren't many other teams in the league interested in signing him to a massive contract.
But Alonso is headed back to free agency after another solid season with the Mets.
Bleacher Report's Erik Beaston recently predicted the Mets would lose Alonso in free agency this winter, but Beaston didn't make a direct prediction on where he'd sign.

"That may depend on whether he is willing to give up first base and slot into the designated hitter spot, with questions about his defensive throwing ability causing concern," Beaston wrote Monday. "If the Mets do not bring Alonso back, there will be plenty of teams who could benefit from his presence in the lineup. The Philadelphia Phillies are one such team, depending on what happens with impending free agent Kyle Schwarber, as are the Seattle Mariners and San Francsico Giants.
"There will always be a place for an incredible offensive presence like Alonso, who can turn a game around with a single swing of the bat. The question is how much of a sticking point remaining at first is for him."
The fanbase seemingly wants Alonso back this offseason, but the front office might not feel the same way.
Alonso is headed for a designated hitter role and the Mets likely aren't going to want to pay a load of money for a long-term DH.
If there's a team in baseball willing to give Alonso this huge deal, he could be as good as gone.
