The San Diego Padres have been one of the best teams in baseball for the last few seasons, but they continue to fall short of their ultimate goals. The Padres are a few steps behind the rival Los Angeles Dodgers, who just won their second World Series championship in as many years.
In the offseason, the Padres are going to need to make some big moves to close the gap on the Dodgers. But they're going to be fighting an uphill battle to close that gap.
The Padres are losing their top two pitchers to free agency this offseason. Dylan Cease's contract expired at the end of the season, and Michael King has reportedly declined his mutual option, per Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune.

The Padres have a lot of big contracts on the books already, so they're likely only going to be able to sign one of King or Cease, if that.
King should have plenty of suitors in free agency. He's likely not going to land a huge deal like Cease or the other top free agent pitchers, so there should be at least eight or 10 suitors for the righty.
He could be a fit for a team like the New York Mets. The Mets need to add pitching as badly as anything this offseason, but they might not want to chase one of the top names. Going after King would save enough money to re-sign Pete Alonso.
The Boston Red Sox could also be in the market for a pitcher like King.
At the end of the day, King is likely going to land a solid contract in free agency. The Padres should be in the mix, but they're bound to have some serious competition.
