The San Diego Padres are in a tough spot this offseason.
Two of the Padres' best players, Michael King and Dylan Cease, are headed to free agency at the same time. It's unlikely the Padres will be able to re-sign both star pitchers, but there's a chance they won't land either one, especially considering how much money Cease is expected to sign for.
MLB insider Jim Bowden recently projected Cease would sign a massive six-year, $187 million deal in free agency this winter.

"Cease has started 32 or more games in each of the last five seasons, striking out more than 200 batters each year while logging between 165 and 190 innings," Bowden wrote. "This season, he led NL starters in strikeouts per nine innings (11.5) but also saw his walk total increase and his ERA jump to 4.55. His HR/9 also rose from 0.9 in 2024 to 1.1 this year. The wobble in command is a concern, but his ability to miss bats, durability and career FIP of 3.67 will have several contending teams lining up to bid for his services."
Cease is likely going to sign elsewhere, especially given this massive contract prediction. The Padres don't have the money to sign Cease to a deal like this while also chasing other players to fill out their roster.
But the New York Mets, Chicago Cubs, and plenty of other teams could make sense as landing spots for Cease. There should be no shortage of suitors for the righty, even if he's projected to land nearly $200 million.
