A video about homeowners who unearthed a series of unique tiles after chipping away at the backsplash tiles in their 1960s kitchen has gone viral on TikTok.

"You won’t believe what we found behind our kitchen backsplash," reads text overlaid on the clip posted by Evelin & Ryan (@evelinandryan). The video has racked up over 1.6 million views since it was shared on October 20.

The clip shows a hand using a scraper to lift the modern tiles off the wall, revealing an intricate pattern of hand-drawn-style floral tiles hiding beneath. The caption of the video says: "We were not at all expecting that tile to be underneath!! but we’re not mad about it."

A voice-over explains how the homeowners saw something unusual about the wall during their kitchen renovation: "We noticed the backsplash was a little too thick to be one tile. Curiosity got the better of us, and we took this little corner off, and this pattern was not what I was expecting."

Instead of finding dated brown retro tiles, as anticipated, they revealed a completely different aesthetic.

"I’ve never seen anything like this tile, and I would never have picked it. But now I kind of love it," the voice continues. "And now we have to do the rest, and there is a lot. But I think, once they’re all off, it’s gonna look so nice."

American homeowners are investing more in renovations. A 2024 survey by Houzz found that the median spending on home upgrades in the U.S. jumped 60 percent between 2020 and 2023, climbing from $15,000 to $24,000. Kitchens were the most commonly remodeled room, often seen as the heart of the home and a high-impact design space.

‘Cool’ Vs. ‘Better Covered Up’

In the clip, the poster admits they were hesitant about their decision to remove the top tile. The voice-over says: "I was really unsure about this tile. I was like, ‘Have we made a massive mistake?’ Plus, everyone told us we wouldn’t be able to get the top tile off without wrecking the one underneath. So, we kind of had to prove them wrong."

Commenters on TikTok were quick to weigh in, with opinions ranging from admiration to disbelief.

"IT’S AMAZING!!!! chances are you are the only ones who have that tile! it’s so whimsical but the black and white colors would be easy to style around," wrote user living.dead.girl93.

"So cool! Would look good with a contrasting grout!" added user Mymblecat.

Others saw humor and uniqueness in the accidental design discovery. "That’s so lucky. It’s fantastic," said Mark Cochrane🇦🇺, while Μαρία Αγγελή posted, "Old tiles have personality."

A few viewers weren’t quite as enthusiastic. "One of the rare times I think it looked better covered up," wrote user zaynab_haniff.

Gucci & The Clouds said: "ngl [not gonna lie] at first I thought someone had drawn that with a sharpie."

Another, Iggy, commented, "People hating, but I'd rather have cool Beetlejuice sink over the basic grandma floral."
