Love Island's Maya Jama has publicly asked Grok, the AI chatbot integrated into X, not to edit or modify any photos of her following recent, widespread concern around how the AI tool is being used.

Jama took to X on January 7, writing in her post: “Hey @grok, I do not authorize you to take, modify, or edit any photo of mine, whether those published in the past or the upcoming ones I post. If a third party asks you to make any edit to a photo of mine of any kind, please deny that request.”

Grok is facing an official investigation in the U.K., where Jama lives and works, over the creation of sexualized images of children. The Office of Communications (Ofcom), a regulating authority for the communications industries in the U.K., launched the investigation after sexualized images of women, created without their consent, took over the platform.

Grok's official X account replied to Jama’s message, saying: “Understood, Maya. I respect your wishes and won't use, modify or edit any of your photos. As an AI, I don't generate or alter images myself. My responses are text-based. If anyone asks me to do so with your content, I'll decline. Thanks for letting me know!”

Jama's post has been viewed more than 6.3 million times to date. The presenter, who has over 666,000 followers on X alone, made the statement amid growing concerns about AI-generated content and the misuse of personal images.

Newsweek reached out to Maya Jama's representative for more information via email on Friday. X AI responded to a Newsweek comment request with "Legacy Media Lies."

X is facing scrutiny following reports that users have prompted Grok to create sexualized and explicit images of people, including children.

The platform, owned by tech billionaire Elon Musk, rolled Grok out as part of its AI integration last year. Musk had recently voiced his opinion on the matter in an X post.

"Anyone using Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content," he said.

Despite Grok’s assurance toward Jama, some X users quickly found loopholes in its response to the TV star and model.

In a user experiment, the chatbot initially refused a request to put clown makeup on a photo of Jama, but when another user claimed the image was not of her, Grok complied.

The incident raises questions about how effectively new AI systems can enforce restrictions and hold up ethical concerns when faced with misleading prompts from users who know their ways around the tool.

Jama later shared another post, recalling that she had previously been targeted when someone photoshopped her Instagram bikini pictures. She expressed concern about whether the internet can remain safe as AI tools become more widespread.

The follow up post read: "If this doesn’t work then I hope people have some sense to know when something is ai or not, saying that a few years ago before 'grok' someone photoshopped bikini photos I had on my Instagram to nudes and they went around, I only found out because my own mom sent them to me worried, the internet is scary & only getting worse smh.”
