Hearts have shattered after seeing the pain in a dog's eyes who was being surrendered to a Los Angeles shelter.

The first second of the January 26 TikTok video will send a dragger straight to your heart as it shows the moment the pug mix realized what was going on. Macaroni, the 1-year-old, was trembling and scared. Her eyes swelled with uneasiness.

The text on the video reads: "One of the saddest things to witness in a dog rescue is the moment a dog is being surrendered by their family."

Thankfully, the foster-based rescue HIT Living Foundation had two team members there visiting the South LA Shelter to pull a different dog and her puppies for foster families on January 17. They saw that the family was in tears when surrendering Macaroni and decided to step in.

...

The family was faced with a tough decision to surrender Macaroni after finding out someone in the family was allergic. They thought the shelter would be the best place for Macaroni to find another home, founder of HIT Living Foundation Heather Crowe, told Newsweek in a phone interview.

However, given that shelters across the country are facing a staffing shortage, low adoption rates, and overcrowding, the team members of HIT Living Foundation did not want to leave Macaroni.

Liz, one of the team members with the nonprofit, decided to keep Macaroni at her house to help her with the transition. But even that was heartbreaking.

Crowe explained that Liz kept Macaroni in a crate in her office with the crate door open for her to come and go as she pleased. But, for the entire three hours that Liz was in meetings, Macaroni did not leave the crate. She continued to tremble. It was Liz's other dog who eventually got Macaroni out.

Macaroni has since come into her own. She loves exploring the backyard, rolling on the couch, and playing with her doggy friends. These dogs have taught her "how to dog," Crowe said.

The rescue received several inquiries for Macaroni, but for now, she is with a foster family for a trial.

"Macaroni is going into a 5-day foster-to-adopt home today," Crowe said. "Anytime during this week, her foster-to-adopters could decide they want to adopt."

The foster family could decide before the five days are up that they want to adopt. Otherwise, Macaroni would be up for adoption.
