A prominent election analyzer has shifted its rating for Michigan’s closely watched Senate race in favor of Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed.

El-Sayed, a former public health official, is facing off against Republican Mike Rogers, a former Representative and State Senator, for the seat.

Cook Political Report said on Tuesday it had moved its rating for the contest from 'Toss-Up' to 'Lean Democrat'. The update comes as El-Sayed’s former Democratic Senate primary rival, Haley Stevens, doubled down on her support of Rogers, after announcing her endorsement of him on Sunday, drawing heavy backlash from within her own party.

The congresswoman said in a lengthy Monday social media post she had initially tried to “put the party first” after her loss in the primary to El-Sayed, but said her position changed following campaign advertisements that she said tied Israel to wider societal problems.

She was referring to advertisements from the progressive outside group Rebellion PAC that linked U.S. financial aid to Israel with increasing grocery costs, as Newsweek previously reported. El-Sayed has said the ad was not made by his campaign and that he disagrees with its contents.

This is a developing story, more to follow.

Michigan Senate candidate Dr. Abdul El-Sayed speaks to supporters at a “Get Out the Vote" rally where he was joined by former President Barack Obama on October 24, 2026 in Detroit, Michigan.
