The New York Mets are likely headed for an eventful offseason. They missed the postseason after adding superstars like Juan Soto in free agency last offseason. This winter, the Mets need to make big moves in order to avoid the same disappointment next year.

Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz are free agents this winter, and the Mets can't afford to lose them. If they do, they need to find a way to replace them.

Bleacher Report's Tim Kelly recently predicted Alonso would sign a huge five-year, $145 million deal with the Boston Red Sox in free agency, which could crush the Mets.

"Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow is looking for a middle-of-the-order bat for manager Alex Cora's lineup, and Alonso may be the missing piece for a Boston group already budding with young talent, particularly if they can't pry Kyle Schwarber away from the Phillies," Kelly wrote. "If the Red Sox are able to lure Schwarber back, then perhaps, as hard as it is to imagine, the division-rival Phillies could become a player for Alonso if he's willing to be a DH."

The Red Sox need to add a slugger to the middle of their lineup, and it seems like that's what they're going to target.

Alonso would be a huge upgrade at first base over what the Red Sox trotted out this season. But the addition of Alonso would likely mean Alex Bregman will sign elsewhere in free agency.

The Red Sox are going to need to make some big decisions. Pursuing Alonso could be the big decision that gets them over the hump next season.
