A romantic gesture that backfired has become heartwarming memory in a couple's love story.
In a video posted to TikTok, Alyssa, 23, shared the time her boyfriend tried to impress her with his cooking skills on a first date—but didn't quite succeed. Still, it remains one of his favorite stories to tell. Since her video, which shows her boyfriend cooking, was posted, it has received over 600,000 likes. Alyssa spoke to Newsweek about her boyfriend's memory of that day and how his willingness to retell it speaks volumes about his character.
"My boyfriend's [favorite] story to tell people is our the first date when he showed up at my place with a bag full of groceries to make his famous risotto," she captioned the video, which goes on to explain that the risotto was not very tasty.

"Recently, he said he likes telling this story because it shows that even though he didn't impress me the way he wished he did, I still fell in love with him, and it means I really just love him for him and not the things he did," she continued. "He said he wants to show that off to people, saying, 'Hey, this beautiful girl loves me for me.'"
Alyssa told Newsweek that despite the poor taste of the risotto, the couple quickly improvised.
"He was the one who was like, 'Hey this is not the best,' as we were eating," she said. "A little bland, I will be honest...we just dumped a bunch of pepper on it. But, I just loved watching him cook, and we had an amazing night together with great conversations."
People in the comments related hard to the first date, bad food phenomenon.
"My parents' first date, my mom cooked him pesto pasta," one person shared. "Used three heads of garlic instead of three cloves. Safe to say it was inedible."
"My first date with my boyfriend, I came to his apartment and he made some fire chicken verde enchiladas," another shared. "When it came to sitting on his couch to eat...his cat popped out and was hiding in it."
After he tasted her cooking a week later for their second date, Alyssa said her boyfriend became even more self-conscious about his cooking. "It was really endearing to me," she said of his embarrassment.
The couple's dates, other than botched cooking, involved wine, dancing in the living room, and even looking at the stars on a full moon night. And for Alyssa, it was never about the meal—it was about the gesture.
"It has honestly been amazing being with him," she said. "I just love him so much. My heart has never felt so at peace."
