The Context

The discovery comes after a decade-long cold case investigation.

“Ten years of questioning kind of just came together with a possible closing chapter now,” Kevin MacKrell, Steven’s brother, told Miami news station WPLG.

What To Know

Sunshine State Sonar, a private sonar search company, discovered MacKrell’s vehicle submerged in a lake at 900 Peninsula Corporate Circle. The company notified the Boca Raton Police Department, which recovered the vehicle and located skeletal remains inside.

The remains were then given to the Palm Beach County Medical Examiner’s Office. The medical examiner used dental records to confirm that the remains belonged to MacKrell.

MacKrell's last known sighting was at 2:32 a.m. at a Valero gas station located at 3601 North Dixie Highway in Pompano Beach. At approximately 1:30 a.m., MacKrell was seen leaving the downtown area in the 200 block of Southwest 2nd Street in Fort Lauderdale.

Sunshine State Sonar stated on Facebook that MacKrell was supposed to meet friends and go out, but he never showed up.

MacKrell was described as a 25-year-old white male, weighing 150 pounds and standing 5 feet 10 inches tall. His vehicle was a white, four-door 2013 Ford Fusion.
