Forecasters at the National Weather Service (NWS) have issued a weather alert for Lake Mead and surrounding areas as strong winds are expected to lead to hazardous conditions for boaters.

In a wind advisory issued for the Lake Mead National Recreation Area, Lake Havasu and Fort Mohave, and San Bernardino County-Upper Colorado River Valley, the NWS cautioned that north winds 15 to 25 miles per hour, with gusts up to 45 miles per hour were expected.

According to the agency, the strongest winds are expected to occur from Katherine Landing to Needles.

The NWS warned that strong gusts could toss unsecured objects, knock down tree limbs, and potentially cause a few power outages.

“Very rough conditions are expected on Lake Mohave,” said the agency, adding that strong crosswinds are expected to affect Highway 163, Highway 68, and Interstate 40.

“Hazardous boating conditions are expected today through Monday,” the agency said on Sunday. “Waves of 1 to 3 feet on Lake Mead and Lake Havasu and 2 to 4 feet on Lake Mohave will result in dangerous lake conditions for boaters,” it added.

In its wind advisory—issued by the NWS forecast office in Las Vegas—the agency said that winds of this strength have the potential to make driving difficult. “Use extra caution,” the alert urged. “Dangerous boating conditions are expected on Lake Mohave,” it added.

As of reporting, the wind advisory is in force until 9 p.m. PST/10 p.m. MST Monday evening.

However, the conditions aren't expected to last. "It does look like calmer conditions will resume Tuesday onward, and it appears that winds will remain fairly light through the remainder of the week," Chris Outler, NWS Las Vegas lead forecaster told Newsweek.

In neighboring California, the NWS has also issued wind advisories for some southwestern portions of the state.

A wind advisory for this area—in effect until 3 p.m.—warned of north to northeast winds of 25 to 35 miles per hour with gusts up to 50 miles per hour.

A high wind warning has also been issued for the Interstate 5 Corridor, Santa Susana Mountains, Western San Gabriel Mountains and Highway 14 Corridor, and Western Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area. Forecasters expect northeast winds of 25 to 40 miles per hour, with local gusts up to 75 miles per hour across the highest elevations, according to the alert—in place until 3 p.m. PST.

“An extended period of moderate to strong Santa Ana winds will impact the typical wind corridors of LA-Ventura counties through Tuesday, peaking in strength tonight through Monday,” the NWS forecast office in Los Angeles said on Sunday.

“There will be a high risk for downed trees due to the very wet soils, as well as dangerous boating conditions for the nearshore inner waters from Ventura to Santa Monica,” it added.
