Schools and banks

Schools and colleges will likely not close for the national day of mourning, but some may continue to be closed due to the weather conditions brought by Winter Storm Blair.

Banks and their branches will be closed, as they follow the federal holiday schedule, but it will still be possible to use ATMs and digital banking features, according to USA Today.

Postal Services

The U.S. Postal Service will "suspend regular mail deliveries, retail services and administrative office activity" on January 9, according to the National Postal Mail Handlers Union.

It added that there will also be limited package delivery "to ensure the organization does not experience any impacts to its package delivery operations that may negatively affect customers or business partners."

Other delivery services, such as FedEx and UPS, should be operating at normal capacity on January 9.

New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq

The Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association recommended an early stock market close at 2 p.m. Eastern Time (ET) on January 9 for all fixed-income cash markets in "recognition of the National Day of Mourning in honor of the 39th President of the U.S."

Nasdaq will also close all of its equities and options markets on the national day of mourning, and have a moment of silence at 9:20 a.m. ET in honor of the former president.

The New York Stock Exchange equity and options markets will also be closed on Thursday, in observance of the National Day of Mourning, according to a press release on the Intercontinental Exchange.

Federal Government

All executive departments and agencies of the federal government will be closed for the day as a "mark of respect" for the late president, according to President Joe Biden's statement.

Trash collection

What People Are Saying

Matthew Costello, a historian for the White House Historical Association, said presidential funerals often reflect the individual's values. He said: "They are very much involved in the planning process, and the decisions that they make tell us a lot about who they are, how they see the presidency, and how they want to be remembered by the American people."

Vice President Kamala Harris praised Carter's commitment to service and humility during a Capitol ceremony earlier this week, calling him "that all-too-rare example of a gifted man who also walks with humility, modesty and grace."

Newly selected Senate Majority Leader John Thune, who was four years old when Carter was inaugurated described him as "first and foremost a faithful servant of his creator, and his fellow man." The South Dakota Republican recalled his fellow Southerner as a man "willing to roll up his own sleeves to get the work done."

What's Next

At 9 a.m. ET time, Carter's casket will depart the U.S. Capitol, where it has been lying in state, for the funeral proceedings to begin. The funeral will be held at Washington National Cathedral, with the service starting at 10 a.m.
