An Iowa Republican was booed and laughed at during a town hall appearance on Wednesday.

Ashley Hinson, who represents Iowa's second congressional district, was heckled while she praised President Donald Trump and his policies, including his spending bill, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill, which passed in the House of Representatives last week, and defended him accepting a jet from Qatar.

Why It Matters

Recently, town halls have become tense events with Republicans facing the wrath of voters who oppose Trump and his policies.

In March, Trump said heckling was the work of "paid troublemakers," and Republican leaders have speculated that Democrats organized the protests. The GOP has advised party members to stop holding the town halls, although some have continued to do so.

Hinson's district leans Republican but has voted Democratic in the past.

What To Know

"I think Americans overwhelmingly rejected the status quo for the country," Hinson said during the event, amid shouts from the audience. "We were seeing an open border, high inflation, we were seeing hardworking men and women in Iowa and in our country feel like their voices were not heard."

Hinson's responses and praise for the president were met with laughter, NBC reported.

She was also booed when she said she was "proud" to have voted for Trump's spending bill and when she mentioned "high inflation" in America.

People shouted "no" when she said Trump was "fighting for you and fighting for me" and others shouted that Hinson was a "fraud" when a man asked a question about Trump "breaking laws by ignoring federal judge's orders."

A member of the audience said: "There's lots of reasons why somebody like you might be silent. You might be scared to say something. You might actually like to see the corruption...or you might not care about it." Hinson replied that it was "really unfair to imply that I like to see corruption."

Trump is facing multiple corruption allegations involving foreign gifts and his personal cryptocurrency. Democrats and legal experts raised alarms after Trump hosted a private dinner at his Virginia golf club for investors in his $TRUMP meme coin. The guest list included foreign nationals such as crypto billionaire Justin Sun, prompting accusations of selling access to the presidency and violating the Constitution's emoluments clause. Democratic Senator Elizabeth Warren called it "an orgy of corruption."

The White House rejected claims of impropriety, stating Trump's assets are held in a blind trust and that the crypto dinner was a private event.

Trump's acceptance of a $400 million Boeing 747-8 jet from Qatar, intended to serve as Air Force One also sparked outrage. Critics questioned the legality and optics of the gift, which came shortly after a trade-focused trip to the Gulf state.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, "Any donation to this government is always done in full compliance with the law, and we commit ourselves to the utmost transparency, and we will continue to do that."

What People Are Saying

Writing on X after the event, Hinson said: "I will always tell you where I stand. I enjoyed hearing from constituents at my in-person town halls today and sharing more about my work with President Trump to secure the border and lower taxes for the middle-class. Thanks to everyone who came out - I'll continue to be accessible and transparent to you."

Olivia Late, a Hinson spokesperson, told NBC: "Rep. Hinson is not afraid to face anyone and defend her support for the Trump agenda that is going to help Iowa families, farmers, and workers."

What Happens Next

The extent to which Republicans will be heckled at future town hall events depends on how the public responds to Trump's changing policy agenda, moving forward.
