A Minnesota man has turned heads online after sharing his thrift store purchase**—**an antique jeweler’s cabinet he picked up for less than $9.
The man, known as Tim, shared photos of the chest in a post on Reddit under username u/tenglempls in the r/ThriftStoreHauls subreddit. The post quickly gained traction, drawing 7,800 upvotes and hundreds of comments since it was uploaded on September 29, with users praising the rare find.
The post was titled: “I got some weird looks after the involuntary sound I made when I saw this antique jewelers/watchmakers cabinet today. $8.99!!! Perfect for all the little bits I’ve been picking up off the ground for my whole life.”

Images show the small wooden cabinet with multiple drawers, some filled with miscellaneous objects.
Tim, who did not share his age or last name, told Newsweek that he stumbled across the piece at a Goodwill thrift store. “I don’t know what it’s worth, but it’s worth more than I paid for it, I’m sure,” he told Newsweek.

The Reddit post also reflects a broader trend**—**the growing popularity of thrift shopping.
A July report from Research and Markets noted that “over the past five years, thrift store revenue is expected to have increased at a CAGR [compound annual growth rate] of 4.5 percent to $14.2 billion, including an increase of 1.4 percent in 2023 alone.” The report attributed growth to rising consumer spending and increasing demand for sustainable shopping practices.
Reddit users were quick to celebrate Tim’s luck. One commenter, u/ZoeB8s, wrote: “I would have fainted! This is my top favorite find so far on this page.”
Another user, u/MrsOleson, added: “That’s a treasure chest any and every child under 10, adult over 40 and magpie would envy!!! The box was a glorious find and to fill it with such amazing bits…. Ugh!! I’m so jealous!!!!”
Others chimed in with similar admiration. u/BiscuitCrumbsInBed said: “What a perfect chest, for your perfect treasures! I'm so happy for you!”
U/Ghosts_do_Exist noted: “Oh my goodness! I spent forever looking for one online to house my collectibles, and ended up settling for a modern jewelry organizer. You could sell this on Etsy for $80 and no one would bat an eye. Great find!”
U/weedemnreap commented: “That is amazing! Same here....been picking up found treasures since I was a kid, and let's just say, I'm not a kid anymore but I still can't help doing it. That is perfect!”
