At the fall collections in New York, the strongest fashion statement came from the pelt police. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) kicked off style's biggest week by storming Oscar de la Renta's runway carrying placards and chanting "Fur pimp!" Another catwalk fight left style gurus Elsa Klensch and Phillip Bloch seeing red after both were doused in scarlet paint intended for a model at Randolph Duke's show. Designer Michael Kors got hit with a pie during his fur-filled presentation. Like many who were "marked" by PETA, Kors brushed off the attack, literally wiping the Vegan Hip Whip (a tofu substitute for Cool Whip) off his suit as he took his bows. But the protests clearly ruffled Vogue editors Anna Wintour and Andre Leon Talley--both clad in fur. They made a hasty exit after the de la Renta protest. Wintour has reason to be running scared: she's PETA's pet target. PETA supporters handed out pamphlets depicting a skeletal Wintour with the caption without my fur, I am nothing. Despite the protests, fur is this year's hottest trend, and there's little chance that pro-pelt Wintour will turn the other chic.
