My Five Most Important Movies
1. "Dr. Strangelove." Kubrick's nuclear satire is still the best comedy ever made about the unthinkable.
2. "War and Peace." King Vidor's version is the most beautiful and concise adaptation of this impossibly huge book.
3. "Seven Samurai." Akira Kurosawa's great Western is maybe the best of all the "war guilt" movies.

4. "I Vitelloni." Fellini's bachelor comedy. It makes me laugh in different places every time.
5. "Notorious." In my book, Hitchcock's romance is one of the sexiest films ever.
What classic film are your embarrassed you've never seen?: "Vertigo." I've simply never been in the right place at the right time, but I still feel guilty. It's a Hitchcock classic.
What film do you want your children to watch someday?: "La Grande Illusion." It's the film that turned me onto the notion that movies could do serious things—beyond just Doris Day singing.
