Forgotten what it's like to be bricked up inside a vault? Instead of that dusty old Edgar Allan Poe anthology, reach for a new CD-ROM, called "The Dark Eye" (Inscape Windows/Mac hybrid CD-ROM $49.95), a first-person perspective game in which your peregrinations through a house trigger nightmares based on stories by Poe. Remember the heartbeat under the floorboards in "The Tell-tale Heart"? In this game, you get to play the killer. Or the victim -- depending on how you enter that part of the story. The larger world in which these stories take place is artfully detailed. Small touches -- the vertigo -- inducing spiral staircase, the disembodied handicon that replaces your cursor, the musical score by Thomas Dolby -- create an ambience best enjoyed with a glass of amontillado.
