Rice and Texas State have patiently bided their time ahead of their matchup in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl, one of four bowl games set to be played on Friday. And this one will be personal, considering it was the Bobcats who got the better of the Owls in the First Responder Bowl back in late 2023.
Scott Abell may not have been able to amass a winning record in his first season at Rice - and still won’t with a win on Friday, given the team’s 5-7 record - but can still hold his head high. Granted, the Houston school made this game by default after several six-win teams declined the invitation, but the Owls have nonetheless shown promise in a new system, with some promising results in the first half of the campaign.
G.J. Kinne is in his third season with Texas State, meanwhile, and will have one eye on the future as the Bobcats prepare to join the Pac-12 following this game. His side finished the season 6-6 in the Sun Belt Conference and actually can turn that record positive with a win in Fort Worth.
Texas State has shown a penchant for the big plays with freshman quarterback Brad Jackson running the show, boasting 17 plays of 50 yards or more this term, two more than any other team in the country. And that knack for unlocking defenses is sure to be key against a Rice outfit that has looked all too leaky at times this year.
