The Premier League returns with a bang on Saturday as Manchester United hosts Manchester City in an early kick-off derby to get the weekend up and running with a bang. And the fixture holds special significance as United icon Michael Carrick prepares to make his debut as interim boss of his old club.
The magnitude of the fixture could hardly be bigger to make one’s bow, although Carrick has briefly led his old club as caretaker on several occasions in the past. This time is different, however, after he’s been handed the reins for the remainder of the campaign following Ruben Amorim’s dismissal earlier in January.
And Pep Guardiola will hope to ensure it’s a miserable day's work for his counterpart, given City has drawn its last three Premier League outings in a row. The Citizens now sit six points behind leader Arsenal after dropping points against Chelsea, Brighton, and Sunderland in recent weeks, though the cup competitions are going swimmingly.
United, meanwhile, bowed out of the FA Cup following defeat to Brighton last time out, leaving Carrick with only the Premier League to concentrate on. City is dealing with a slight injury crisis in defense, with John Stones, Josko Gvardiol, and Ruben Dias currently injured, while Omar Marmoush, Oscar Bobb, Mateo Kovacic, and Savinho are also unavailable.
