England will take on Uruguay in the first of two friendly fixtures in the space of a week as it continues its prep ahead of World Cup 2026 later this summer. The Three Lions will soon enter their first major tournament under the tutelage of Thomas Tuchel and are set to escalate the level of competition against one of South America’s finest.
Uruguay will also be in North America this summer and could take on England as early as the first knockout stage. La Celeste finished fourth in CONMEBOL qualifying and is competing in their fifth consecutive World Cup finals, with the two-time world champions desperate to improve upon a group-stage exit at Qatar 2022.
Tuchel has selected an expanded 35-man squad for friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, though there was no room on the roster for Real Madrid right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold. Meanwhile, Eberechi Eze and Jarell Quansah were recently forced to withdraw from the selection due to injury, with Harvey Barnes and Ben White replacing them.
Uruguay boss Marcelo Bielsa will find some familiar faces on the opposition, given the former Leeds United chief went up against many of them in his Premier League days. Captain Jose Maria Gimenez should earn his 98th cap as he hopes to bring up a century at the World Cup, aiming to lead his country to more success over England after he featured in a 2-1 win the last time these teams met at the 2014 World Cup.
