The turn of the new year marks plenty of new milestones and even the start of a new generation. With that in mind, it's understandable to wonder how old people from each generation will be in 2025.

Who will be turning 30 this year? Who is turning 21? What is the youngest generation called? Newsweek has you covered, as we've mapped out the ages of each generation so you don't have to.

A typical generation spans between 15 to 18 years, according to The Pew Research Center. While there is often a large diversity of thought, experience, and behavior within each one, the generational labels can help us to understand societal changes over time.

Generation Beta

Anyone born between January 1, 2025, and 2039 will officially be part of Gen Beta, currently the world's youngest generation.

Indeed, by 2035, it is estimated that Gen Beta will make up 16 percent of the population, and the first time that we have seven living generations, according to demographer and social analyst Mark McCrindle.

As previously reported by Newsweek, Gen Beta is the first generation to live in a world of artificial intelligence and automation, the worsening effects of climate change, and greater sociopolitical instability across the world.

Generation Alpha

Prior to January 2025, this was the youngest generation until Gen Beta took the crown. People in Gen Alpha were born between 2010 and 2025, meaning the oldest among them will turn 15 this year, while the youngest will celebrate their first birthdays.

By the end of 2025, Gen Alpha will be between 1 and 15 years old.

Each generation comes of age during a unique time period, and Newsweek asked the AI-powered tool ChatGPT to outline some of the significant markers for Gen Alpha. ChatGPT highlights that this generation will grow up with advancing technology and virtual reality, meaning they're "expected to be the most digitally connected and diverse generation" yet.

Generation Z

Gen Z, also referred to as zoomers, includes those who were born between 1997 and 2012. In 2025, people of this age group will turn anywhere between 28 and 13 years old.

People in this generation will be celebrating their 18th, 21st, and 25th birthdays this year.

They are also the first generation to grow up entirely during the digital age, with a marked influence from social media and smartphones from a young age.

Millennials

Anyone who was born between 1981 and 1996 is a millennial, and many in this generation will celebrate their 30th and 40th birthdays this year.

By the end of 2025, millennials will range from 29 years old to 44 years of age.

Pew Research Center explains that millennials are among the most racially and ethnically diverse adult generations in U.S. history. They came of age during the height of the economic recession, which has shaped many of their life choices and financial opportunities.

Millennials are often regarded as socially conscious, tech savvy, and concerned about climate change.

Generation X

Before millennials, we had Gen X, which is everyone born between 1965 and 1980.

Anyone from this generation will be between the ages of 45 and 60 by the end of this year. Plenty more milestone birthdays to celebrate for this age group.

Gen X is often overlooked and forgotten, leading many people to call it the "middle child" generation, according to Britannica.

This generation was the first to grow up with personal computers, cable television, and they experienced an increase in divorce rates. They came of age during a tumultuous era, including the Cold War, collapse of the Soviet Union, the AIDS epidemic, and the energy crisis in the '70s and '80s.

Baby Boomers

The post-war generation includes anyone born between 1946 and 1964. That means that the oldest of this generation will be 79 by the end of the year, and the youngest will be 61.

This generation was given its moniker due to the surge in birth rates after World War II, which saw the U.S. population increase by more than 50 percent from 1945.

Highlights for Baby Boomers included the popular Ford Mustang, the invention of the Frisbee, and cassette tapes for listening to Elvis Presley and The Beatles. Younger generations will have to pick their jaws up off the floor, but in 1971, the average gas price was 36 cents per gallon.

Silent Generation

This encompasses anyone born between the years 1928 and 1945, and by the end of 2025, people in this age group will be between 80 and 97 years of age.

As explained by The Pew Research Center, this generation was given its name as they were perceived as conformist and civic-minded. They were typically characterized as hard workers who sought stability in a postwar era.

At a young age, many of them were married and had children, and they benefitted from a boom in the construction of affordable suburban housing. Many of them came of age during the Great Depression, the civil rights movement of the mid 1950s, and many Silents broke down racial barriers, including Muhammad Ali and Arthur Ashe.

Other notable members of this generation included Marilyn Monroe, Gloria Steinem, the Rolling Stones, and President Joe Biden.
